TV Mounting Hub Yorba Linda: TV Above a Fireplace in Yorba Linda

TV Mounting Hub Yorba Linda covers mounting a TV above a fireplace in Yorba Linda homes — floor-to-ceiling ledger stone in the family rooms of large houses, brick fireplaces in 1960s ranch homes and drywall-covered chimney walls in newer builds — checked for heat above the firebox, for the wall behind the TV and for a viewing height that does not strain the neck.

Stone, ledger stone and where the anchors go

Fireplace wall Where it shows up How it is fixed
Stacked or ledger stone Family rooms of larger houses Sleeve anchors in the stone body, or screws through the veneer into framing
Brick 1960s ranch fireplaces Sleeve anchors in the brick body
Drywall over a chimney frame Newer houses Lag bolts into framing

The installer first probes to learn whether the stone is solid or a thin veneer, because the right hardware follows the answer.

Sleeve anchors in brick and stone. On brick or stone, the plate is held by sleeve anchors set in the solid masonry, not in the softer mortar joints.

What the numbers show

  1. Hole in the brick body The hole is drilled in the body of the brick or stone, away from the joints.
  2. Expanding sleeve As the bolt is tightened, a cone expands the sleeve and grips the masonry.
  3. Mortar joint The joint between the bricks is too soft to hold an anchor under load.
  4. Wall plate The plate is clamped flat against the face of the brick by the anchors.

Heat above the firebox and a screen that lowers

A wood-burning box sends heat and soot up the wall, and a gas unit throws heat past the top of the opening. The installer checks the firebox type, the mantel depth and the wall temperature after a long fire, and reads the clearance in both manuals.

A pull-down mount parks the screen high, above the heat, and lowers it forward and down to eye level for viewing; the swing path has to clear the mantel.

How a pull-down mount lowers a TV over a fireplace. A pull-down mount parks the TV above the mantel and swings it down and forward to eye level, clearing the mantel on the way.

What the numbers show

  1. Wall bracket into framing The bracket is bolted into the framing above the mantel, never into the firebox surround alone.
  2. Gas-spring arms Two parallel arms with gas springs carry the TV's weight through the swing.
  3. Parked position The TV rests high above the mantel when it is not being watched.
  4. Lowered position The dashed outline shows the TV pulled down and forward to eye level.
  5. Mantel clearance The swing path clears the front edge of the mantel, shown by its depth line.

Wires over the stone

Stone cannot be opened for cables. The usual choices are a paintable raceway along a mortar line, a run in the side wall to a cabinet, or an in-wall rated kit where the chimney is framed in drywall.

  • Power stays a short run to an existing outlet and never travels inside the wall as a plain cord.
  • A new outlet above a fireplace is an electrician's job.
  • Flue and gas-line areas are never drilled.

Mantels, built-ins and fireplace remodels

Some Yorba Linda fireplaces are flanked by built-in cabinets or a long mantel shelf. A mantel changes the swing path of a pull-down mount, and a built-in changes where a cable can go. If the fireplace is being remodeled, tell the installer before the stone goes up: a recessed box, a backer board and a conduit can all be added while the wall is open. After a remodel, the same changes are much harder.
